A Solid Foundation…

at the pre-K and Kindergarten levels is key in a child’s mathematics education. Without that foundation, like a building, the structure can come tumbling down in later years.

There are many things that can be done NOW to make that foundation strong. So, let’s get to work on helping our children today! For teachers, it means spending time EACH day on mathematics (yes, we all know how districts want the focus on English/Language Arts but, mathematics is KEY to later success in today’s global market!).

Calendar math activities alone provide a multitude of opportunities for valuable math lessons. For parents, it means incorporating math throughout the day as well! There are so many ‘teachable moments’ throughout the day when math is being used! So, get out and make mathematics more of a priority each day. We can do it and make our children mathematically powerful and develop young mathematicians together.

Who or What is Savvy Math?

Many of the textbook programs, despite having met the strict criteria necessary to become adopted by the State of California, may not provide the necessary extras that will meet individual student needs for a particular class. As a 24+ year veteran teacher and mathematics educator, having served on California’s instructional materials evaluation panel, and former curriculum writer and director of several National Science Foundation-funded teacher professional development projects, I realize this need. Recently, I taught a class of 31 multi-lingual, multi-cultural Kindergartners. The majority of my students were English Learners, with a mix of Special Needs students. Sharing tried-and-true activities that work may help other teachers and families, and thus, is the purpose for the Savvy Math website.

Content Standards

In  the state of California the content that teachers must teach is governed by specific ‘content standards’ Every seven years, the framework containing these standards is revised. The latest framework determines what is to be taught in the public schools and publishers work diligently to align their materials to these rigid standards (as a reviewer of these materials, Savvy Math’s editor knows this very well!). It is crucial for teachers to be sure to cover each and every standard as successive grades depend upon the foundation begun in Kindergarten. Sometimes it is necessary to supplement or augment the provided curriculum and this is where this website comes in.
